Established in 2010, the U.S.-based program acknowledges and celebrates the most exceptional innovators, leaders, and trendsetters in education technology.

Founded in Austin in 1995, Marathon Kids has transformed the lives of more than 2.5 million kids to date. Launched in 2020, Marathon Kids Connect is the nonprofit organization’s activity-tracking mobile app and cloud-based reporting platform. The platform makes it easier than ever for coaches, teachers, parents, and volunteers to track kids’ miles, log their active time, access free resources, and celebrate students’ progress throughout the year.

When the Covid-19 pandemic forced students to shift to remote learning, Marathon Kids Connect provided a seamless transition between school and home, enabling coaches and families to collaborate in helping kids stay active and continue hitting their physical activity milestones.

Finalists and winners for The EdTech Awards 2021 were announced to a worldwide audience of educators, technologists, students, parents, and policymakers interested in building a better future for learners and leaders in the education and workforce sectors.

“The worldwide pandemic put education and training to the test, but remote learning and working—in many unexpected ways—ultimately brought us closer,” said Victor Rivero, EdTech Digest’s editor-in-chief, who oversees the program.

Rivero credited leaders and innovators, and their tools and techniques, with keeping the learning world connected to knowledge and to each other. “After a year like no other—to all those innovators, leaders, and trendsetters in K–12, higher ed and workforce learning staying connected, productive, persistent, and getting us closer despite all challenges: We salute you.”

Austin-based water filter company makes donation to help Texas students stay active

AUSTIN, Texas – March 23, 2021 – Marathon Kids is teaming up with Aquasana, maker of water filtration products for the home and on-the-go, to help Texas school children stay hydrated. Proper hydration is essential for wellness and development, and the Marathon Kids mission is to get kids moving and set them on the path toward a lifetime of good health.

With the Marathon Kids program, kids run a cumulative marathon or more, one mile at a time, one day at a time. Runners know the importance of staying hydrated for optimal health and athletic performance, and Aquasana believes clean drinking water, filtered of potentially harmful contaminants, is fundamental for overall health and well-being.

The partnership with Aquasana comes in time for the 41st National Nutrition Month®,  an annual campaign created by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics to highlight the importance of healthful eating and physical activity habits. The Marathon Kids program teaches children to set goals and celebrate their progress. Active kids need plenty of water daily, and they can work with their Marathon Kids coaches to set hydration goals along with their daily distance targets.

“We’re dedicated to supporting overall wellness by providing easier access to healthy, great-tasting water,” said Derek Mellencamp, General Manager at Aquasana. “Good nutrition and physical activity are important to schoolchildren now more than ever, and we’re thrilled to support Marathon Kids in helping them establish strong foundations for a long and healthy life.”

Research shows that healthy children perform better in school and make better choices. Marathon Kids will use Aquasana’s generous donation to help more children, of all backgrounds and abilities, access their programming, set healthy habits and achieve more than they ever thought possible.

About Marathon Kids

Marathon Kids shows kids through running that they can achieve more than they ever thought possible. Kids in the program work at their own pace to run or walk the equivalent mileage of four marathons (or more!). They run one lap at a time, one day at a time, and before they know it they’ve gone farther than they ever dreamed. Kids enrolled in the program have a network of dedicated adults showing them how it’s done, and most importantly, a motivated and inspiring coach supporting them every step of the way.

| PRESS RELEASE

With H-E-B’s generous support, Marathon Kids now offers free physical activity programming for all Texas students.

(AUSTIN) — H-E-B has committed $125,000 to Marathon Kids as part of its Texans Helping Texans community outreach initiative. Marathon Kids is a nonprofit organization on a mission to get kids moving and set them on a path toward a lifetime of good health. Thanks to this generous support from H-E-B, the organization’s programming is now available to all schools and community organizations in Texas free of charge.

Founded in Austin in 1995, Marathon Kids has transformed the lives of more than 2.5 million children to date. Its fun and rewarding walking and running programming is utilized to inspire students to set big goals and work towards them, one day at a time.

In an ongoing effort to reach as many children as possible, regardless of background or ability, Marathon Kids sought to remove the cost barrier by replacing its fee-based registration structure with free programming that includes access to activity-tracking technology and a cloud-based reporting platform. Partnerships like H-E-B’s have been essential to making this shift possible.

H-E-B has partnered with Marathon Kids since 2011, demonstrating their commitment to empowering kids to make healthy choices. Marathon Kids CEO, Cami Hawkins, says H-E-B’s culture is about showing up when their community needs it most. “H-E-B has been a consistently generous funding partner, supporting thousands of kids every year. Traditionally focused in the Rio Grande Valley and Houston, this year, we are excited to extend this funding into all of the H-E-B communities across the state,” Hawkins says. “Now more than ever, kids need access to fun easy physical activity, and with this generous investment from H-E-B, Marathon Kids will be able to reach more kids than ever before”.

Kristina Jewasko, Corporate Giving Manager with H-E-B, points to the company’s Spirit of Giving as a guiding philosophy. “H-E-B is proud to support Marathon Kids in its mission to introduce children to the joy of running,” Jewasko says. “We are honored to help Texas schoolchildren, who truly are the future of this great state, build strong foundations for healthy lifestyles.” In becoming the Official Grocer of Marathon Kids, H-E-B is living up to its charge of Texans Helping Texans.

In its fourth year of partnering with nonprofit organization Marathon Kids, Midland Independent School District is set to implement Marathon Kids Connect district-wide in the 2020–2021 school year. This move will make Marathon Kids programming available to more than 13,000 students across 26 Midland elementary school campuses.

Marathon Kids Connect, a physical activity tracking app and reporting platform, was developed to make it easier than ever to track and report on kids’ active time. In this period of transitional Blended Learning for Midland ISD students, Marathon Kid Connect also bridges the gap between school and home, as parents and teachers can use the app together to log kids’ physical activity, track their progress, and celebrate success.

In 2017, H-E-B made a $50,000 investment in Midland ISD, which allowed students on 17 campuses to participate in the Marathon Kids program at no charge. That year, 95% of the 3,300 participating students ran at least 26.2 miles—the distance of a marathon—and top-performing students were recognized at the Root Beer Mile at the conclusion of the season. 21 coaches and volunteers in Midland ISD participated in the district’s first-ever Marathon Kids Leadership Academy. The following year, H-E-B increased its investment to 20 schools in Midland ISD, allowing the program to grow. Last year, again thanks to support from H-E-B, 3,882 Midland students tracked their distance each day, together running more than 86,000 miles.

The Marathon Kids program is proven to jumpstart healthy, long-lasting change for children. At a time when physical and mental health are at a premium, the partnership between Marathon Kids and Midland ISD highlights the district’s commitment to the wellbeing of its students and their families, now and into the future.

Audra Hooker, Director of P.E., Health & Wellness for Midland ISD, says, “I’m so pleased that in our fourth year to partner with Marathon Kids, we will be able to expand our program exponentially and provide our elementary students a healthy lifestyle opportunity that they can continue to pursue for years to come. In turn, it is our hope that other family members will be influenced by the program as they see the positive changes in our students’ health, physical fitness, behavior, reduced stress levels, and academic achievement.”

AUSTIN, Texas – Over the past 25 years, Marathon Kids has gotten 2.5 million kids moving—and now, it’s time to celebrate! Founded in Austin in 1995, Marathon Kids offered the first children’s running program grounded in research. And that research was compelling: It showed that regular exercise improved kids’ physical and mental health and even boosted their academic success. It also showed that early physical activity set kids up for a lifetime of fitness. These tenets became the basis for the nonprofit’s commitment to helping children of all abilities lead healthy, active lives.

A quarter-century later, Marathon Kids has expanded its reach to kids in all 50 states as well as the U.K. The organization has remained agile and future-oriented even as it has hewed close to its longtime vision of seeing “all kids active and healthy for a lifetime.” In 2020 alone, as the unprecedented COVID-19 pandemic has raged across the world, Marathon Kids has made key innovations to make its programming accessible to kids of all backgrounds and abilities. With the launch of Marathon Kids Connect, an all-new, cloud-based physical activity tracking and reporting platform, Marathon Kids also removed the cost barrier by offering the program completely free to all schools and community organizations. Visit MarathonKids.org/Connect to join, access free resources, and get kids moving.

There are more exciting events in the works, starting this September, when Marathon Kids will celebrate its milestone anniversary and kick off the new running season by teaming up with Academy Sports + Outdoors to host a virtual relay race. We Run the World is a free walking and running event spanning the entire month of September. People around the country will join forces to run or walk a cumulative 25,000 miles (slightly more than the circumference of the earth!), with FitRankings tracking participants’ miles.

Relay registration is pay-what-you-can, ranging from free of charge to $50; contributing at least $10 gets you swag like a virtual running badge and printable race bib along with endless bragging rights. Participants will be invited to keep track of individual and community progress on the Leaderboard, and there is a virtual Hall of Fame for anyone who wants to upload a photo with the hashtag #MKRunTheWorld. All are welcome to run or walk in this epic virtual event, including kids, grownups, and families; the more people participating, the more ground covered together! Learn more and register at MarathonKids.org/WeRunTheWorld.

At the end of the month, when We Run the World reaches its 25,000-mile finish line, it will be time to pass the baton to a new season of Marathon Kids who are primed to start the 2020–2021 running season. The Austin Independent School District will launch the new season with a Marathon Kids Day celebration in October. Plans are also in the works for a finishers’ celebration in the spring—whether virtual or in-person remains to be determined, but either way, it promises to be legendary!

Be sure to follow Marathon Kids on social media, including the hashtag #MKRunTheWorld, and check out the organization’s blog as it highlights the Faces of Marathon Kids—nine key figures who have been instrumental in launching the nonprofit and helping it innovate and expand into what it is today. Each will be celebrated on the Marathon Kids blog, including fundraising pages for each figure to raise necessary funds so the Marathon Kids program can remain free for all, for good.

In response to distance learning challenges and the increased need for tools to facilitate hybrid PE programming, Marathon Kids has launched a new digital toolset, available at no charge.

For Immediate Release: 8/5/2020

AUSTIN, Texas – Marathon Kids is excited to announce new changes that will help the program reach more children than ever before in the 2020–21 school year while meeting the shifting needs of kids, parents, teachers, and schools amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. This year, the Marathon Kids program is completely free for schools and community organizations, with no limit to the number of children who can participate. Included with free registration is a welcome pack that includes group tracking posters and a starter pack of Marathon Kids’ all-new sticker-based reward system, online lesson plans for on-campus and at-home learning, and access to the new digital lap-tracking and reporting platform, Marathon Kids Connect.

Marathon Kids Connect is a cloud-based run club management platform that provides a digital lap-tracking app along with free educational resources and reporting capability. The platform makes it easier than ever to measure and report on kids’ active time. Coaches and classroom teachers track students’ progress simply by scanning runners’ ID cards after each lap completed or entering miles manually, increasing accuracy, and simplifying record-keeping. Parents can also log kids’ miles at home.

Because the pandemic situation is still rapidly developing, it is unclear what schooling will look like in fall 2020. Schools across the country are anticipating budget cuts that could affect Physical Education programs, and distance learning may continue to be incorporated in both fall and spring semesters. With so much uncertainty, children need regular physical activity more than ever, for their mental health as well as the physical fitness benefits it confers. These considerations inspired Marathon Kids to make the program free for all children in the United States, with free access to lessons and programmatic resources that have been adapted to incorporate safe distancing practices

With the new platform, PE teachers and run club coaches can use quick reports to share their students’ physical activity progress with principals and district leaders. Classroom teachers, who may need to help students meet physical activity requirements, can do Marathon Kids in the Classroom, using the platform’s free online resources to get kids moving safely during the school day. They will also have access to a new library of training videos and content modules on topics like Behavior Adoption Strategies to Build Self-Efficacy, Integrating Social-Emotional Learning with Physical Activity, Marathon Kids + COVID 19, and more. Live, customized training is also available to help teachers and administrators get familiar with the new platform.

Parents can use Marathon Kids Connect to become an extension of Run Club, viewing their child’s progress from home and submitting additional miles covered outside of school.

Run club goals remain the same as in past years: Students work toward their first cumulative marathon (26.2 miles), and then strive to complete their 2nd, 3rd, and 4th marathon milestones before the season’s end. One lap at a time, one day at a time, kids make progress on their goals and discover the joy in regular physical activity.

About Marathon Kids: The mission of Marathon Kids is to show children that through running, they can achieve more than they thought possible, and to put them on the path to healthier lives. The organization empowers teachers, coaches, and community members to start the Marathon Kids program in their schools, camps, and organizations. Marathon Kids works for any kid, at any fitness level. Kids in the program work at their own pace to run, or walk, a cumulative 104.8 miles—the equivalent mileage of four marathons—over the course of the school year. Marathon Kids provides the training, tools, and resources teachers, parents, and coaches need to keep kids moving. For more information, please visit MarathonKids.org.
