Volunteer Position Descriptions

  • Arrive before the event to help with event set up
  • Make sure that all items are completely set up and ready to go
  • Bring your enthusiasm and be excited and make lots of noise for the kids!
  • Direct traffic and make sure people know where to go when they enter the stadium
  • Direct groups of people to their seating sections from behind the stands
  • Communicate with ushers to know when sections are full or need to be filled
  • Direct traffic between the entrance and the actual seating
  • Take participants to the staging area when their section is called
  • Listen to the Captain, who announces which section is next
  • Kindly remind people to sit and not stand in the stairs or aisles so that runners can get to the concourse
  • Split the crowd into manageable size heats and escort them to the track
  • Use handheld signs to communicate with the crowd and keep them sectioned
  • Work closely with staging, concourse, and usher volunteers
  • Create a series of human chains at the start line of every heat so that no one gets hurt
  • Make sure that excited kids stay behind the start line pacers before they are released to run
  • Cheer kids on as they run past you!
  • Send finishers into reward alley at the end of their laps
  • Make sure they keep running until they’re off the track and that groups don’t gather and block other runners
  • Congratulate the runners as they make their way into reward alley
  • Hand out water, Marathon Kids’ rewards, and sponsor rewards to participants, parents, and teachers
  • Stay at the lost and found tent in case a kid, parents, or teachers gets separated from the pack
  • Communicate with the emcee regarding any lost child
  • Wait with kids until their parents can pick them up
  • Provide first aid for minor injuries and radio EMS for serious injuries
  • Keep runners from exiting reward alley and crossing the track until there is a gap between running heats.
